boy assesment essay

Essay plan

Write an essay on the bridge scene but in the Y in SEXY talk about child neglect.

Child neglect

Child neglect is a form of child abuse, and is a deficit in meeting a child’s basic needs, including the failure to provide adequate supervision, health care, clothing, or housing, as well as other physical, emotional, social, educational, and safety needs.

On average, 1 child dies every 5 weeks in New Zealand. Due to child neglect / abuse.

the Four types of abuse:

1. Physical abuse

2. sexual child abuse (Rape, molestation, child pornography production and possession)

3. neglect (Physical neglect, educational neglect, and emotional neglect)

4. Emotional abuse (Aka: Verbal, Mental, or Psychological abuse)

Bridge scene :

Calm

No sound

Amazing grace playing

Flashbacks

Camera techniques

Close up

Long shot

Mid shot

Birds eye view

In boys head

Flashbacks included times with his parents and family back when he was younger and he started to realise that his dad was not much of a father to him .

In the film boy directed by taika waititi the bridge was a challenging setting for the leading character, Boy. It is here that he realises that his father isn’t a role model to him or anyone. The music, flashbacks and camera work, particularly close ups, reinforce this idea to the viewer

From the very start of the movie we realise that the boy’s father is absent and not even there in his life. But soon on in the movie he does return to waihau Bay he is not interested in his sons but only wants money, and wants to find money that was previously buried. Sadly Boy does not understand and see this and looks up to his father. It isn’t until the bridge scene where boy is hit by the truth that his father is not a role model to him or anyone and that he is selfishly only invested himself and what he wants. This makes this setting challenging for both Boy and the viewers, we see a lot of sadness as his mind unfolds and he really finds out what his father has been like this whole time. Waititi has used music at this point to reinforce boys’ realisation.

Amazing Grace the song is played over the top of boys realisation. Sung in maori, it starts quietly behind the diegetic sound, before drowning out all other sound in the scene. ”that scared a wretch like me” the wretch is referring to Boy, who is the poor unfortunate and unhappy person in the scene due to what just happen. During his flashbacks , hatred and depression overwhelms him. “I was once lost but now I am found”  here the lyrics describe boys’ moment of understanding ”was blind but now i see” boy can finally notice and tell who is father shogun truly is, which highlights how significant the bridge scene is to the viewers.

Hi Luke,

As we discussed, I am somewhat concerned by the fact that you have 4 periods remaining and not a lot of writing.

Remember to use the notes I wrote for your class:
http://create-2020.teacher.edutronic.net/boy-notes/

The structure of this essay is fairly identical. When you write of the importance of a role model, you will also write of child neglect.

I would encourage you to read over the link provided this weekend.
